My engagement ring is a 2 carat beautiful Cubic Zirconia that has fooled jewelers at first glance (hubby found an online dealer that sells hand cut, high quality stones - much better than $5 mall stones). It was my idea - he didn't try to talk me into it. Diamonds are the cause of a lot of violence in Africa (Google blood diamonds for info)and mining is not good for the environment. The whole idea of spending a huge amount of money on a ring doesn't work for me, especially when much cheaper and very beautiful options are available. Finally, man-made diamonds are now available. These are not CZ or diamond simulants but real diamonds made in a lab. The technology is new, but I've heard predictions that these perfect, flawless diamonds will sell for a small fraction of mined diamonds so the value of diamonds overall could really drop.

I cannot be the only female who doesn't like diamonds, can I? About the least expressive gemstone there is. I suppose it expresses how deep in a financial hole someone's willing to go for you, and isn't THAT romantic!
