Tower Defense games have been very popular lately, so I thought I’d take a look at my Top 5 Tower Defense Games.

I believe the idea behind tower defense games comes from Warcraft 3. Basically you need to build different type of towers in order to destroy the “creeps”. Usually the towers have different properties and upgrade opportunities.

Tower Defense5. Tower Defense is very basic with very simple graphics. All creeps are grey circles that move at the same speed.

There’s not much to this one, but it’s the first TD game I played so it makes the list because of the addictiveness.

Flash Element TD4. Flash Element TD has basic graphics which a variety of different looking creeps. There are two types of creeps, land and air based. So some towers can only hit land targets, some only air and some can hit both.

This one includes a monetary bonus depending on how much you have left in the bank after each wave of creeps. So it’s to your benefit to survive a wave by spending the least amount of money. You really need to do this to go far in the game.

3. Flash Circle TD is the sequel to Flash Element TD but a different game all together. The graphics and sound are much better and it’s kept the cool monetary bonus.

What makes this different is that there are endless waves of creeps that keep walking around the map. You lose once 100 creeps are on the screen.

Flash Circle TD

2. Desktop Tower Defense is unique in that you determine which path the creeps have to take. All the want to to is cross the screen so it’s up to you to put towers in their way making it a long journey for them.

The downside to Desktop Tower Defense is the graphics. The just aren’t that special, however trying to create a long path is quite addictive.

Desktop Tower Defense

1. Onslaught like Desktop Tower Defense isn’t very special graphically, but it does offer so much more.

Onslaught has 8 different maps to play. Towers have 3 upgrade options (Damage, Range, Fire Rate) where others have just 1. Different towers can work together to make much stronger attacks.

There are a lot of aspects to Onslaught that need to be mastered to go far and get your name on the leader board.

Onslaught

There are heaps of these games out there, but these five are my favourites.

Go forth and kill the creeps!

I think Onslaught is by far the most boring of them all

Comment by Ozh on June 5th, 2007

Onslaught is by far the best and most addictive! You need to use combos and experience the awesomeness. Click on the How to Play tab and you can see how mixing towers together will yield amazing powerups.

Comment by Faraz on June 5th, 2007

Actually, I’m pretty sure tower defense games come from Starcraft. There are a whole slew of maps made for that game, although there are certainly some good ones for Warcraft as well.

In any case, thanks for sharing these time burners. ;D

Comment by macro on June 5th, 2007

yeah, i think they originated in turret defense, which became lurker d, which became a whole host of games.

Adam

I have played Starcraft Flash Action 3 but it just didn’t do it for me.

The graphics are superior, but the enjoyment level wasn’t there for me.

Really, I should have done an “Honorable Mention” and added that.

I’m hooked on Onslaught, I reckon its the video game equivalent of crack cocaine.

I manage a team of software developers and forbid them to play it during work hours, but as soon as im in my office, I get plugging away at the waves of weird looking alien hordes.

These games should come with a health warning!

Comment by hubba on June 5th, 2007

This game has similar feel to it and it’s kind of different. You upgrade all your weapons and depending on the upgrade the weapon can receive totally new effects.

Stayed up ALL NIGHT playing Desktop Tower Defense. The key is to upgrade 3 or 4 of the fastest ones to the highest level.

Comment by Shandooga on June 6th, 2007

Onslaught is definitely the best

Comment by Hip Hop on June 6th, 2007

I agree completely with a comment i say before.

“Onslaught is by far the most boring of the game on the list”
Its horrible, the weapons are not diverse and the amount of time and effort to put into it…………
It just plain ol sucks

Comment by novatrek on June 6th, 2007

Ya I agree that onslaught is the worst on the list. Flash element TD is the best by far I’d say. However, I’d rather just play Starcraft tower defense :)

Better yet I’d rather just play DotA!

I’m surprised Antbuster didn’t make the list. I think it’s one of the most original and free-form TD games available and is highly enjoyable. It’s not as good as Desktop Tower Defense (which is in my opinion the best one, but we’ll agree to disagree), and maybe not Onslaught, but I think it’s well worth a look just for a unique take on this crowded (though still very enjoyable) genre of Flash games.

I stopped after… lets see….
i build a green and a blue tower at the start… i upgraded the green tower to the maximum (damage and how often you can shot in a sec.) and after some time i builded 2 green towers after the upgraded one… all i had to do is wait… they were all killed at the beginning

Comment by Rob on July 13th, 2007

Onslaught is by far the most boring game I’ve ever played ever. The only way I can explain why people are saying good things about it here is they must be friends of the guy who made it or something.

Comment by Bog on July 20th, 2007

flash element td is the best i’ve played and i acctually supprised myself by saying vector td is the second best because it’s so addictive.FE TD is the best because it’s the most complex in monsters in my oppinion and is funny and strategic. i’ve also played lots of different td on warcraft 3 which basicly beats everything but considering being on the internet leaving W3 out flash element td is the best td by far. ONSLAUGHT IS A PIECE OF C£*! and i am sure many people agree with me on this.

the trick to make onslaught a bit entertainig is wen you think u got enough towers hit several times spacebar to send various waves at 1 time(but still not 1 of the best TW)DX

Comment by real_slim_jd on August 6th, 2007

Xeno Tactic is the best defence tower game by far :D

Comment by the_it on August 21st, 2007

Nice collection, but truthfully, turret defense came from Starcraft, not warcraft 3. Turret defense was made into many many maps in starcraft even before warcraft 3 existed

Comment by Caleb on August 22nd, 2007

i love aunslaught its my favorite and i always play it no other tower defence game can beet it.

Comment by joshua on August 23rd, 2007

Alright, I’ve played all the games on this list. I like Onslaught TD the most. Vector TD is really good as well. I’ve gotten as far as the 532 wave on Onslaught. And I’ve beaten 5 of the maps for Vector. I don’t see why people don’t like Onslaught, theres a bunch of combos for the towers, it’s a never ending game, and it just increases in difficulty as you go.

This is the site I play onslaught at:

Well se ya and bye bye!

Comment by LooLooStar on September 6th, 2007

Onslaught is just okay. There are a lot of combos, but there are only a couple worth building - laser rockets or nukes. Nukes are so much more powerful than anything else there’s no reason to build anything else. It gets really boring.

Comment by Laffy on September 19th, 2007

iv played almost all of them and onslaught is my favorite and is really hard. but one you should have up there is bloontower defense by ninjia kiwi. its by far the most fun and iv beat it 50 times…its so mnuch fun

Ant Buster is top tier tower defense. NO set path means inventive tower placement. Downsides are it gets so damn tough and the missile, ice tower combo is almost the only way past level 80.

Comment by matthew on October 30th, 2007

The only other ways I found are a bunch of machine gun turrets and ice and poison turrets at both ends.

Comment by NOT matthew on October 30th, 2007

personally of these five i like
desktop defense. Its easy to mold the two streams of creeps into 1.

Comment by NOT matthew on October 31st, 2007

Please… no one ever praise or link to Xeno Tactics. It’s a skinned, stolen version of DTD. Even if you don’t care about it being stolen, it makes you look like a moron to claim you like it better than an IDENTICAL game.

(Oh, except that DTD runs faster because its graphics are simpler.)

Comment by Billybob on December 12th, 2007

Comment by Billybob on December 12th, 2007

First off, I think this site proves the whole idea of ‘different strokes for different folks’. There are a lot of opinions both ways on almost every one of these games. Those people who insist the site author is writing all the good reviews of onslaught because of the poor spelling/grammar and because they don’t think it’s possible anyone would like the game… seriously, you think he’d waste that much effort to promote an opinion he’s not getting paid for? By the way, I enjoy the onslaught game. Feel free to check my spelling and grammar.

Comment by DeBoe on December 12th, 2007

Second, I agree that anyone spending all day on the computer playing these games needs to get out more, but a few hours here and there won’t hurt anyone… especially when you’re at work and have nothing better to do.

Comment by DeBoe on December 12th, 2007

Oh yeah, and with the whole “I’ve beaten onslaught” thing… I don’t believe you. My roommate set the game up so that he was creating ‘black holes’ (I still haven’t figured out how he did that) and left the game sitting overnight. When he checked in the morning, he was pushing almost fifty thousand waves. That’s when he just closed it. The only problem with the ‘black hole’ thing is that you don’t get any money for the ‘aliens’ you kill with them. Guess they don’t consider it ’sporting’.

Comment by DeBoe on December 12th, 2007

Finally, my favorite three (not that it really matters) in no prticular order are: Bloons TD2 (mostly because of the monkeys), onslaught (because it’s a great way to waste time when there’s nothin else to do), and Antbuster (because of the free-range ants).
I’ll have to try out that garden defense one.

Comment by DeBoe on December 12th, 2007

Okay… First off… There are way tooooo.. many different “Turret-D”(<-Org name from Starcraft, and best multiplayer TD ever!) games. Second “DeBoe” you forgot to type the “a” in “prticular”(Last paragraph)..Fool! And finally “Vector TDx” Is the BOMB! Its not goofy looking, like the rest of the garbage games.

Comment by rich on December 19th, 2007

Onslaught seems very poorly designed. Even on hard, it’s stupidly easy for a really really long time, and then out of nowhere the creeps stop dying. The first 20 waves or so are just a waste of time.

Comment by jeejee0 on December 21st, 2007

Where are Gem TD and Vector TD? Desktop TD is the best in that list. They are the three best tower defence games around at the moment.

Comment by anon on December 31st, 2007

I totally agree anon. Flash circle sucks the big one. iwin has a GREAT one out..garden defense. Great new tower abilities. also stalingrad has a 2nd version now. It’s hard but fun.

Comment by kellie on January 1st, 2008

I’m not sure what you guys see in vector td. I agree it’s ok, the best however is stretching things by far.

The new challenges that have been added to Onslaught improved the game for me for a bit. The tower combos is a nice change up at times in my TD gaming. My fav right now is stalingrad 2

once you get the towers and air defences everywhere it is just a matter of upgrading every now and then while the levels clock up. you can go off and get a coffee or read a book while it does its thing. not very satisfying really…

plus my connection speed isn’t too hot so it got painfully slow after a while.

Anyone had any luck on actually BEATING xeno tactics. I gave up after a LONG fight with this one. level 6 seems impossible to beat. Anyone?

Comment by kellie on January 16th, 2008

So far my favorite Tower Defense game has been “Desktop Tower Defense” it has inspired me and my friends to make a TD game of our own. For those of you who are interested check out our website at:

http://www.rivalgames.org

We have put a lot of hard work into making this game and are hoping to go on a marketing spree as soon as we feel the game has matured enough.

This is not a flash game and must actually be downloaded. The advantage of this is of course our ability to use a powerful game engine to have quite a bit of action going on.

Comment by Joshua Jewell on January 17th, 2008

Have you tried Flash Element TD 2(Sequel to FETD1)?

If not i suggest you take a look because it beats out most if not all of the TDs you list.

http://www.casualcollective.com/games/Flash_Element_TD_2/

The first map can be played by guests, if you register for free you can even play the second, much harder map!

Comment by Dingolicious on January 18th, 2008

Joshua, I have tried your game and I think it is great. Very much potential here to be AWSOME!!! I havn’t figured out how to regester with your site yet though…hidden regester link?? lol

I’m off to play your game again. Have a good one.

Comment by johnson on January 22nd, 2008

SWEET

Comment by Nate on January 22nd, 2008

obviously none of u have played vector attack……best one ive played

Comment by pimp on January 26th, 2008

I’ve played vector, it’s ok. Garden Defense blows them ALL out of the water!!!

Comment by kellie on January 27th, 2008

you press the s key when you chose the tower to sell. you press the m key to move the tower, but it costs 500.

onslaught owns. u are all pathetic little idiots. go run along and play random games, but even if the graphics suck on onslaught, the gameplay is what truly counts, and that (combos, strategy, going past level 1000) are what make it the best. besides, vector td is too easy. beat it on the hard map without losing a life.

Comment by tercers on January 29th, 2008

Hey Tercers if you like a challenge I dare you to beat our levels “FourWay” or “Invasion”! So far only one person can beat them.

You can download the game at http://www.rivalgames.org . We have very hard levels for seasoned pro’s and easier levels for beginners.

Comment by Joshua Jewell on January 29th, 2008

Hey Josh….2 people can beat FourWay. Beat it today.

Going to give Invasion level a try. I really like the updates. I have to check the site more often so I don’t miss’em.

LOVE the game!!

Comment by kellie on January 31st, 2008

Hey Kellie I looked at the high score list and saw that you beat Invasion, did you beat FourWay and have a problem submitting your score?

Congratulations by the way! Even the other devs cannot beat that level.

I would encourage you to be more active on our forums, we would be glad to hear suggestions, and can be quite interesting people.

Thanks for your support of the game it really means a lot! Now do you have the secret of getting more people to play? :p

Comment by Joshua Jewell on January 31st, 2008

desktop tower defence is cool but way too easy, if u just build all of one tower + air defence and upgrade like crazy u always win

Comment by td fan on February 1st, 2008

Hey Joshua, no problems, I was mistaken with which level it was. I have been trying to beat the four way…OMG sooo hard. I will definately visit the forums!

Hey Dot, I tried the game, it’s too bad it moves so slowly. I felt like I had been playing for a while..looked up..lol only level 16. I quit. I don’t have the patience for the pace of it.

From what I can tell, those rebound towers and missle ones look effective. The red towers that shoot the little bullets…seemed uneffective after about the 12th level. looks like you’re going to want to get at least one blue freeze tower established by l0th level. If I had the patience for the pace, I would play it out.
Good luck!!

I can’t believe more people havent given credit to Metalix yet. I guess its been undiscovered so far. I play a lot of Tower Defense games and in my opinion this one is the best by far because it is extremely challenging and forces you to make smart decisions. Also graphically it’s 3D and I think it’s trumphs all others in that category to. Heres a link:
http://www.shockwave.com/gamelanding/metalixtd.jsp give it a try and let me know what others think about it. I got to level 27, see if anyone can beat it and post on here and let me know.

ahaha lol, my first tower defence game was “castle” by abra, whitch ran ona programcalled byond, hnce the nam of the site byond.com

i feel im a bit of a TD nerd, i seem to master them very fast, whitch is a bit annoying, i dont get alot of playing time, it gets boreing after a while. so far i would haft to say onslaught is the best td game ive ever playeed, i just loveh the way the rocket towers work and the turreyt combo, only downside is it would be better if there were actually more tpes of ofencive turret andless of the *exchangerate* things

Comment by Rushin on July 19th, 2008

Hey i love td games.Try Anti-TD or Antbuster.Google TD games for a BIG sullection.I like onslught 2 as my first TD game and it caught me up to other TD games.Go onto ArcadeVoyage.com for TD games with Money Hack,Including,Vector TD, Onslaught 2,And AntBuster!

Comment by MeetTheSpartin on July 20th, 2008

just had a go on vector td, its got to be the worst ive ever played, theres nothing original about it, how can people say it overtakes onslaught?! tell me 5 things really original about vector td and ill admit it. oh and also i completed it on my firts try. level 3 green tower ftw.here’s my personal list:
1: onslaught
2: castle
3: wicked defence
4: master of defence
5: that zombie one that was put up here was pretty good.

to tell you the truth i find that games like desktop tower defence and antdefender i dont like, hafting to make your own maze. i prefer preset ones with an option of making your own map. i find it much more challenging and the own map bit help the game stay fun for longer.

Comment by Rushin on July 20th, 2008

rofl that anti td gave me a run for my money, i wasent sure what to do at first, the game doesnt make all that sense to me though, you still gain money qhen your own creaturs die whitch is a bit odd… wasent that hard to beat level 100 though

Comment by Rushin on July 21st, 2008

ohho?! i just found 3 TD games that ive never played before!
1: Omega tower defense 2
2: DtD tower defence
3: Random Defence

The first one is awesome! definatly beats castle off number 2, much like onslaught but no combo’s and not as creative

the second one i havent gogt around to playing, you hafta download it and the links not working for me

the 3rd one i havent played yet either!

Comment by Rushin on July 21st, 2008

oops forgot to add about Omega, i tihnk it moves way too slowly. thats one of the downsides of it
