Top 5 Tower Defense Games

Tower Defense games have been very popular lately, so I thought I’d take a look at my Top 5 Tower Defense Games.

I believe the idea behind tower defense games comes from Warcraft 3. Basically you need to build different type of towers in order to destroy the “creeps”. Usually the towers have different properties and upgrade opportunities.

Tower Defense5. Tower Defense is very basic with very simple graphics. All creeps are grey circles that move at the same speed.

There’s not much to this one, but it’s the first TD game I played so it makes the list because of the addictiveness.

Flash Element TD4. Flash Element TD has basic graphics which a variety of different looking creeps. There are two types of creeps, land and air based. So some towers can only hit land targets, some only air and some can hit both.

This one includes a monetary bonus depending on how much you have left in the bank after each wave of creeps. So it’s to your benefit to survive a wave by spending the least amount of money. You really need to do this to go far in the game.

3. Flash Circle TD is the sequel to Flash Element TD but a different game all together. The graphics and sound are much better and it’s kept the cool monetary bonus.

What makes this different is that there are endless waves of creeps that keep walking around the map. You lose once 100 creeps are on the screen.

Flash Circle TD

2. Desktop Tower Defense is unique in that you determine which path the creeps have to take. All the want to to is cross the screen so it’s up to you to put towers in their way making it a long journey for them.

The downside to Desktop Tower Defense is the graphics. The just aren’t that special, however trying to create a long path is quite addictive.

Desktop Tower Defense

1. Onslaught like Desktop Tower Defense isn’t very special graphically, but it does offer so much more.

Onslaught has 8 different maps to play. Towers have 3 upgrade options (Damage, Range, Fire Rate) where others have just 1. Different towers can work together to make much stronger attacks.

There are a lot of aspects to Onslaught that need to be mastered to go far and get your name on the leader board.

Onslaught

There are heaps of these games out there, but these five are my favourites.

Go forth and kill the creeps!

    Are you guys 15? The tower defense game genre has been around since the 70’s. Warcraft 3 isn’t truly tower defense either, and it cetainly isn’t the genre creator.

    The comments of the summer camp director are very true. Our kids go to camp each summer and return filthy dirty, with bug bites, sunburns, scrapes, bruises, and once a broken finger. But for a month, there is no electronic entertainment, nobody is babying them, and they have the freedom and authority to plan their days with much less structure than in school. There is much more tolerance for rough-housing than in the feminized Ritalin dispensaries our schools have become. They return happy, enthusiastic, and with visibly increased maturity and self-confidence.

    Where’s whiteboards tower defense on there? i really thought that one rocked, really simple but never lagged and was still challenging at points. can’t beat the hard version without juggling…period.

    K shut the hell up bud original tower deffence games were started in Blizzards, Starcraft, and then followed up in Blizzards, Warcraft 2. Flash tower defence games came after these two. Stop talking.

  27. June 4th, 2009 at 18:41 | #27

    New TD games I would recommend Fieldrunners, Geodefense (both iPhone) and Plants Vs. Zombies – not quite tower defense but similar in many respects.

    you guys do know there were games like this for the commodore64 and apple 2 in the mid 80s ya talkin about warcraft being the origin of TD really shows you’re all kids but hey that’s cool games are for kids all good.

  36. July 22nd, 2009 at 14:17 | #36

    I feel like this list should be re done at this point now that so many new tower defense games have come up. Desktop tower defense was really good, but now there is gemcraft, bloons, etc. Just my thought on that.

  37. July 22nd, 2009 at 15:05 | #37

    @Ryan
    I’ve thought about doing that for a while now… One day!

    July 27th, 2009 at 12:51 | #38

    The original, first of all (after the version on the warcraft games) was flash element TD.

  39. NigelH
    July 28th, 2009 at 15:29 | #39

    @Woz
    The first TD game i’ve ever played was an arcade game called Rampart and that was back in 1990. I don’t think there were any earlier than that. If so, they weren’t widely distributed or mainstream… My top three are:
    (3)Warzone Tower Defense (2)Vector (1)Gemcraft. After playing Gemcraft, it’s hard to tolerate any other anything less than innovation in these legacy titles that pop up what seems like daily.

    Onslaught is a poor excuse for a tower defense game.. it’s too easy. I got to wave 84 with minimal effort, it only got hard at wave 99 and that’s when I basically gave up.

    YEAH! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO STARCRAFT! i think i’m gonna play that now instead of desktop tower defense, which is by far my favorite td game. another sort-of td game thats cool is the space game.

    @Woz

    lol you are funny in your stupidity. Since 70’s? Muahaha! If “tower defense game genre has been around since the 70’s.” as you say, so please give me a name of a computer tower defense game from 70’s. Otherwise shut up, you are making yourself a fool :D D

    Hey, guys… I think this series of comments proves that far too many computer-maniacs with repressed anger, violence and frustration find a primary way of releasing their feelings by criticizing everything they can on public forums, blogs, etc. Learn to post civilised comments and maybe something constructive will come out of it, too.
    As far as I am concerned, I have to agree with the choice of Onslaught as top TD game, I just played non-stop for the last 3 hours, got seriously addicted and that was only 2 maps (no challenges yet). Desktop Tower Defense had me addicted before, now I have a new challenge.

  48. September 30th, 2009 at 09:17 | #48

    Hey guys… I think that last comment proves that douche bags fresh out of high-school psychology classes with superiority complexes think that using words like repressed anger will make them seem like they know what they’re talking about when they really just want to do the EXACT same thing they’re bitching at everyone else for doing while pretending they’re somehow above it.

    Me, I like bitching. It’s fun. What I can’t stand is hypocritical bitchers. Bitches. =D

    On an actually-related note, why does everybody want the bloon D series to be up there? In most of them, you can beat it by just stacking one or two different kinds of towers. I remember beating one of them using nothing but that tower that shoots spikes in all directions past level 4 or so. How is that good? -.-
