Top 5 Tower Defense Games

Tower Defense games have been very popular lately, so I thought I’d take a look at my Top 5 Tower Defense Games.

I believe the idea behind tower defense games comes from Warcraft 3. Basically you need to build different type of towers in order to destroy the “creeps”. Usually the towers have different properties and upgrade opportunities.

Tower Defense5. Tower Defense is very basic with very simple graphics. All creeps are grey circles that move at the same speed.

There’s not much to this one, but it’s the first TD game I played so it makes the list because of the addictiveness.

Flash Element TD4. Flash Element TD has basic graphics which a variety of different looking creeps. There are two types of creeps, land and air based. So some towers can only hit land targets, some only air and some can hit both.

This one includes a monetary bonus depending on how much you have left in the bank after each wave of creeps. So it’s to your benefit to survive a wave by spending the least amount of money. You really need to do this to go far in the game.

3. Flash Circle TD is the sequel to Flash Element TD but a different game all together. The graphics and sound are much better and it’s kept the cool monetary bonus.

What makes this different is that there are endless waves of creeps that keep walking around the map. You lose once 100 creeps are on the screen.

Flash Circle TD

2. Desktop Tower Defense is unique in that you determine which path the creeps have to take. All the want to to is cross the screen so it’s up to you to put towers in their way making it a long journey for them.

The downside to Desktop Tower Defense is the graphics. The just aren’t that special, however trying to create a long path is quite addictive.

Desktop Tower Defense

1. Onslaught like Desktop Tower Defense isn’t very special graphically, but it does offer so much more.

Onslaught has 8 different maps to play. Towers have 3 upgrade options (Damage, Range, Fire Rate) where others have just 1. Different towers can work together to make much stronger attacks.

There are a lot of aspects to Onslaught that need to be mastered to go far and get your name on the leader board.

Onslaught

There are heaps of these games out there, but these five are my favourites.

Go forth and kill the creeps!

    Immortal Defense

    is innovative and good

  2. June 5th, 2007 at 05:32 | #2

I think Onslaught is by far the most boring of them all

Onslaught is by far the best and most addictive! You need to use combos and experience the awesomeness. Click on the How to Play tab and you can see how mixing towers together will yield amazing powerups.

  4. June 5th, 2007 at 10:04 | #4

Actually, I’m pretty sure tower defense games come from Starcraft. There are a whole slew of maps made for that game, although there are certainly some good ones for Warcraft as well.

In any case, thanks for sharing these time burners. ;D

  5. June 5th, 2007 at 15:08 | #5

yeah, i think they originated in turret defense, which became lurker d, which became a whole host of games.

It Seems you haven’t Played Starcraft Flash Action 3 game http://www.ugoplayer.com/games/starcraftfa3.html

  8. June 5th, 2007 at 16:29 | #8

I have played Starcraft Flash Action 3 but it just didn’t do it for me.

The graphics are superior, but the enjoyment level wasn’t there for me.

Really, I should have done an “Honorable Mention” and added that.

  9. June 5th, 2007 at 19:05 | #9

I’m hooked on Onslaught, I reckon its the video game equivalent of crack cocaine.

I manage a team of software developers and forbid them to play it during work hours, but as soon as im in my office, I get plugging away at the waves of weird looking alien hordes.

These games should come with a health warning!

  13. June 5th, 2007 at 22:26 | #13

This game has similar feel to it and it’s kind of different. You upgrade all your weapons and depending on the upgrade the weapon can receive totally new effects.

Stayed up ALL NIGHT playing Desktop Tower Defense. The key is to upgrade 3 or 4 of the fastest ones to the highest level.

  16. June 6th, 2007 at 04:48 | #16

    Onslaught is definitely the best

    June 6th, 2007 at 07:29 | #17

I agree completely with a comment i say before.

“Onslaught is by far the most boring of the game on the list”
Its horrible, the weapons are not diverse and the amount of time and effort to put into it…………
    It just plain ol sucks

  18. June 6th, 2007 at 09:44 | #18

Ya I agree that onslaught is the worst on the list. Flash element TD is the best by far I’d say. However, I’d rather just play Starcraft tower defense :)

Better yet I’d rather just play DotA!

Thanks for these! They are addictive! I have already slacked on two assignments for school, stopped talking to my wife in complete sentences, and forgot when and where I work.

Thanks for letting me know about Vector TD!

It is definitely up there with the best!

  26. June 14th, 2007 at 08:14 | #26

lol at the ‘weapons are not diverse’ comment about onslaught.. read the how to play and look at the combos.. its the most diverse of the games in the list. As for the amount of time.. try using the space bar.

I’m surprised Antbuster didn’t make the list. I think it’s one of the most original and free-form TD games available and is highly enjoyable. It’s not as good as Desktop Tower Defense (which is in my opinion the best one, but we’ll agree to disagree), and maybe not Onslaught, but I think it’s well worth a look just for a unique take on this crowded (though still very enjoyable) genre of Flash games.

    onslaught sux…
    I stopped after… lets see….
i build a green and a blue tower at the start… i upgraded the green tower to the maximum (damage and how often you can shot in a sec.) and after some time i builded 2 green towers after the upgraded one… all i had to do is wait… they were all killed at the beginning

  41. July 13th, 2007 at 03:55 | #41

My favourite is definately Vector TD, followed by Xeno Tactic. However, Ive got three to try out lol =]

Onslaught is by far the most boring game I’ve ever played ever. The only way I can explain why people are saying good things about it here is they must be friends of the guy who made it or something.

    July 27th, 2007 at 21:39 | #43

flash element td is the best i’ve played and i acctually supprised myself by saying vector td is the second best because it’s so addictive.FE TD is the best because it’s the most complex in monsters in my oppinion and is funny and strategic. i’ve also played lots of different td on warcraft 3 which basicly beats everything but considering being on the internet leaving W3 out flash element td is the best td by far. ONSLAUGHT IS A PIECE OF C£*! and i am sure many people agree with me on this.

TNT is promoting the show The Company with a tower defense game: http://www.tnt.tv/series/thecompany/games/?contentId=31439

  45. August 5th, 2007 at 17:25 | #45

im hooked on onslaught and all, but the difficulty seriously pisses me off…
i get through a few waves, but then i cant get enuff cash to keep going!

  46. real_slim_jd
    August 6th, 2007 at 06:45 | #46

the trick to make onslaught a bit entertainig is wen you think u got enough towers hit several times spacebar to send various waves at 1 time(but still not 1 of the best TW)DX

  47. zac
    August 16th, 2007 at 12:28 | #47

Xeno Tactic is the best defence tower game by far :D

Nice collection, but truthfully, turret defense came from Starcraft, not warcraft 3. Turret defense was made into many many maps in starcraft even before warcraft 3 existed
