The Helix Nebula, which amateur astronomers have nicknamed the “Eye of God” or “Eye of Sauron,” shines out in all its infrared glory.
The nebula is actually the exploded remains of a star that once looked like our sun. The white dwarf is visible as a tiny dot in the centre of the picture.
The red colour in the middle of the eye denotes the final layers of gas and dust blown out when the star died.
